Tom's visit!

Tom came to visit this past weekend, and we saw some of the major sights of Paris together. Here's some pictures from the weekend. First is Tom in front of Sacre Coeur:Then us in Montmartre looking at the city:Next is me by the Seine:
Followed by me in front of the inverted pyramid made famous by The DaVinci Code:Then Tom on top of the Arc de Triomph with the Champs Elysees below:
It was a fun but short visit. I got one last chance to really be a tourist in Paris, which was quite nice, and see Tom before he heads off to Sydney.
Well, that's it for now. A toute a l'heure!

Walk like a Parisian

Well, I'm finally getting settled into Parisian life. I'm almost at the end of my preliminary course. Although I'm still relatively far from being "Parisian," I'm beginning to feel like I'm actually living here. So here are some more pictures of my life in Paris. This is my monthly metro pass (Carte Orange), which is just about the most useful thing I have gotten so far in Paris:This is my lovely street:
It's pretty residential, if you couldn't tell by the rows of apartment buildings. However, if you want to send me mail (letters, postcards, packages...), send them to 56 rue de Passy, Paris 75016, which is the NYU center. I'd say to send it to my address, but the mail never seems to come there and I'd check my NYU mailbox pretty much every day. This is what my apartment building looks like, though:Then there is an obligatory picture of me in front of Notre Dame. It's at night, so the color's a little off, but it works...Next is a picture of Julie, Molli, and Supraja at the opera. We went to see "Les comptes d'Hoffman" by Offenbach:It was at the Opera Bastille, which was built sometime recently, so it's really modern-looking.
Well, hopefully I can post again soon. A bientot!

The city of light

I have now been in Paris for 3 days and am loving every minute of it. This city is amazing and beautiful every hour of the day, even when it's cold and cloudy. Yesterday the sun came out for actually quite a while, so I decided it was a perfect day to take pictures of my new room (I moved in Thursday night), so here are a couple of good ones. First one is from my desk looking at my doorway.

The second is the view of the balcony I share with my "roommate" (we each have our own rooms):
19Then, the piece de resistance, the view out my window. And the building across the street thatyou see was designed by Baron Georges-Eugène Haussmann, the Parisian civic planner from theth century. Now some pictures around Paris. Of course there is the obligatory shot of the Eiffel Tower:
I'm not sure what the green light is in the middle. The best guess I've heard is an upside down Christmas tree. Next is a picture of my new friends Molli, Emily, and Julie in the garden of the NYU centerwhere I'll take most of my classes and call from every so often cause they have wifi):
Next is Molli, me, and Emily in front of the Arc de Triomphe (another classic Paris shot):
That is it for now. I am having a fabulous time in Paris and I'll be writing again soon. For now, a bientot!

Last days in the states

Although I am leaving for Paris tomorrow, I'm still enjoying my time in Chicago. I didn't get to Ann Arbor before I left, but I spent some time with people back home. Tom and I went to the Bahai temple in order to try out his fancy new digital SLR camera and I got some pretty good pictures out of it, my favorite of which is below. Anyway, I'm basically all packed and ready to go for my 5 pm flight. Wish me luck!

Leaving on a jet plane...

It's finally happening: I'm leaving for Paris on Tuesday! It doesn't seem real, but I will be landing in Paris on Wednesday morning and beginning my semester there. I know that I will be living with a family in Paris, but that's all the information I have so far about my living arrangements. We'll also have three days of temporary housing before moving in to make sure we get along with our families and roommates, so it won't be immediate. Then starts three weeks of orientation where they'll test my level of French and give us a crash course in living in Paris. I feel pretty prepared for the language aspect, but this will be the largest city I've ever lived in and that is sure to be different.

I'm practically packed with all my papers in order and am ready to go. I have Skype, so if you need to reach me, feel free to call my skype name Lafried518. Hopefully I'll be able to update this as much as possible about my trip and life in Paris, so check back every so often!
